Wisconsin gets permission on drug tests for unemployment benefits
Wisconsin has received permission to conduct drug tests for unemployment benefits from the federal office.
It is currently unclear how soon the state will implement the changes.
Trump argues that, if an individual seeking unemployment benefits can only do jobs in the fields that routinely perform drug tests, then such testing is in order to receive those benefits.
The Department of Workforce Development will be responsible for carrying out the programme.
But the department is still waiting for extra guidelines from the Department of Labor before proceeding, especially on which individuals should undergo testing.
In any case, what happens to those who fail the drug test?
As it happens, they would enter a state-funded drug rehabilitation programme.
Those failing to take part would lose their benefits.
The state’s budget for the programme is set at $250,000.
Supporters believe that it will fast-track job seekers towards employment.
Opponents, though, argue that such testing is a hurdle for those trying to make ends meet while seeking new work opportunities.
In response, Republican Rep. Warren Petryk of Eleva said that the point is not to punish those with a drug use problem.
Rather, it is to help them get treatment and find a job.
Democratic Rep. Evan Goyke of Milwaukee responded that Republicans should allocate more money towards rehab.
