Pharmacy is raided for prescription drugs

The abuse and illegal trade of prescription drugs continues to plague every part of the UK.

Today we heard reports that a Boots store in Liskeard, Cornwall, was raided last weekend. It is thought that burglars only stole Diazepam, also known as Valium, which is prescribed for the treatment of anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia and several other conditions.

Diazepam possesses several powerful properties, including hypnotic, sedative and skeletal muscle relaxant. It is because of these properties that many people abuse the drug.

Sergeant Martin John, based in Liskeard, said: “We are concerned that people may have been offered the drug for sale. We are urging everyone to be aware of the consequences of taking Diazepam and the real threat to health of those who take it without prescription. If you have been offered it by someone other than a doctor, please call police.”

In addition to its calming effects, Diazepam comes with several side effects such as excitement, rage or worsening of seizures in epileptics. It can also cause depression and is linked with cognitive defects in users.

Other serious side-effects include reduced effectiveness of the central nervous system, hypotension and, in some severe cases, taking Diazepam can result in coma.

Use of the drug can lead to serious problems of physical dependence, and withdrawal can be a long and problematic process. It is thought to be more addictive than heroin and this is fuelling demand on the black market.

The Cornish police have arrested a man in connection with the robbery and are appealing to the community to report any illegal trade in Diazepam.
